Marketa Irglova :: "The Hill"

Posted by jayfo13 on January 27, 2008

Absolutely can not listen to the Once soundtrack enough. This song is one of my favorites. It’s titled “The Hill” by Marketa Irglova. If you haven’t seen this movie yet, do yourself a favor and go rent it now. It’s the best musical movie I may have ever seen.

Featured Artist :: Over the Rhine

Posted by jayfo13 on January 20, 2008

This year, MMB is going to feature 3 songs from an already somewhat established artist…but should definitely be heard by music lovers due to the greatness of their work. The first band highlighted is Over the Rhine. The Cincinnati based band’s latest cd Trumpet Child is one of the best cds from 2007. OTR has put out strong cd after strong cd for years on end; never settling into one sound or genre and always reinventing their sound. Led by Linford Detweiller and Karen Bergquist, OTR is one band I always lay down the money for whatever they come up with next. Incredible lyrics and soaring melodies signify an Over the Rhine song. Their discs are usually strong from first note to end note. So, if you haven’t listened to them in the past, start with 1992’s Patience and work forward from there. They never disappoint.

Juno Soundtrack :: "Anyone Else But You" by the Moldy Peaches

Posted by jayfo13 on January 20, 2008

One of the best soundtracks to come down the pike in while and also the reason I haven’t been listening to a lot of other music to post:

The Juno Original Motion Picture Soundtrack featuring this one by the Moldy Peaches fronted by Kimya Dawson.

Great Northern :: "Low is a Height"

Posted by jayfo13 on January 12, 2008

January always makes feel as though my life is in slow motion. The first track of the year, Great Northern’s “Low is a Height”, could be the soundtrack for a guy having an emotional breakdown…which you know, it’s that time of year.

Sorry about the long layoff. New Years Hangover.

Posted by jayfo13 on January 12, 2008

I’m going to change the focus of MMB just a bit for 2008. Instead of focusing only on new, unheard of artists, I’m also going to feature new works from established musicians that readers may or may not already know. The reason being, in 2007, I found myself not listening to talented artists I love in lieu of trying to find and break the next great new artist. While MMB will still be dedicated to finding the next great unknown, I just can’t not listen to artists I love just because they’ve actually already had some publicity in the past.

But before I move on to 2008, here’s a list of my favorite musical discoveries via Mister Music Blog in 2007:

  • William Elliott Whitmore
  • Elisa
  • Let’s Go Sailing
  • Muse
  • Bat For Lashes
  • Fields
  • The Format
  • The Do
  • Roddy Woomble
  • Amandine
  • A Fine Frenzy
  • Nicole Atkins
  • Jonathan Rice
  • Static of the Gods
  • Darren Hanlon
  • Chris and Thomas
  • Manhattan Love Suicides
  • Pink & Noseworthy
  • Zeph and Azeem
  • The National
  • Pela
  • Silversun Pickups
  • Willy Mason
  • Explosions in the Sky

I’m not going to take the time to link to all of these artists, but if you’ve never listened to a song by any of these acts, you’re doing yourself a disservice. Check them out and enjoy.

Now, on to 2008. Thanks for reading and, as always, enjoy the music.
