Fans of MMB know I’m a huge fan of the Fox show ‘So You Think You Can Dance’. The creative control behind that show aren’t afraid to give the green light to quirky dance routines and seem pretty much at ease letting the choreographers choose whatever music they want…even if it’s not main stream.
Producers of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ seem proud to let their freak flags fly whereas other shows on mainstream television (I’m thinking of you American Idol) discourage any sort of individuality when it comes to song choice. In fact, singers and artists on other network shows are strictly forbidden from performing material not in the preordained songbook.
Not only does SYTYCD allow creative people to be creative, they seem to encourage it. On last weeks show, choreographer Sonya Tayeh had Kourtni and Matt dancing to Hot Chip’s :: “Wrestlers” and before that in the same episode, dancers Comfort and Chris perfromed to Marilyn Manson’s :: “The Beautiful People”. In a day and age when you can’t see a video on MTV, MTV2, VH1 or Fuse, it’s refreshing to see artists allowed to express themselves visually to such great music most main stream viewers would otherwise never experience.
